Kerala PSC High Court Assistant Exam Syllabus 2026

So, you’re aiming for a coveted spot as a High Court Assistant? Excellent choice. It’s a highly respected career within the judicial system offering massive growth, great pay, and long-term stability.

But before you begin studying, you need a precise battle plan. To help you crack it, let’s dive straight into the official exam structure and detailed syllabus breakdown.

The Official Exam Pattern

The High Court Assistant selection process features a single-day comprehensive written exam split into two distinct parts, followed by a personal interview.

Selection Process & Mark Distribution

Stage Test Type Marks Questions / Tasks Duration
Stage 1 Objective Test
(OMR Based)
100 Marks 100 MCQs 75 Minutes
Stage 2 Descriptive Test
(Written)
60 Marks Precis, Essay, Comprehension 60 Minutes
Stage 3 Interview
(Viva-Voce)
10 Marks Personality & Awareness —
Total Selection Pool 170 Marks — —

Important Rules to Keep in Mind

  • Negative Marking: There is a penalty of 0.25 marks (1/4th) deducted for every incorrect answer in the Objective stage.
  • The Catch: Both the Objective and Descriptive papers are given on the same day. However, the High Court will only evaluate your Descriptive paper if you clear the required cutoff score in the Objective section (typically a minimum of 40%).

Stage I: Objective Test Structure

The 100-mark objective test is your immediate gateway. It is entirely conducted in English and tests three core subjects:

  • General English (50 Marks): The highest weightage section. Focus on grammar, vocabulary, sentence corrections, and idioms.
  • General Knowledge (40 Marks): Covers current affairs, Indian history, geography, basic IT, general science, and heavily prioritizes the Indian Constitution (specifically the judicial systems, amendments, and fundamental rights).
  • Basic Mathematics & Reasoning (10 Marks): Quick calculations, logical puzzles, number series, coding-decoding, and basic arithmetic.

Stage II: Descriptive Test Structure

Right after you put down your OMR sheet pen, you will transition to the written descriptive paper. This 60-mark section purely measures your articulation and language command.

  • Short Essay Writing: Expressing structured, logical arguments on recent socio-political topics or legal advancements.
  • Précis Writing: Summarizing a complex legal or general passage cleanly while retaining its core meaning.
  • Reading Comprehension: Answering detailed analytical questions from a given text.

Smart Strategies to Top the Rank List

  • Integrate Your Prep: Don’t treat the Objective and Descriptive phases as separate hurdles. While studying current affairs or the Constitution for your MCQs, pick key topics and practice drafting short 250-word essays on them.
  • Perfect Your English Accuracy: Because English dictates 50 marks in the prelims and the entire 60 marks of the descriptive paper, your grammar and vocabulary will make or break your rank. Keep a daily journal of new editorial words.
  • Time Management is Crucial: Solving 100 questions in 75 minutes requires rapid-fire decision-making. Daily mock exams are necessary to ensure you don’t stall out on the Math or Reasoning sections.
